Am I Really Starving Myself?

I was always one to never miss a meal, well with the exception of breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day.

I thought I was well nourished because I did eat food, just not the right kinds of food.

My first meal of the day would usually start around noon. Sometimes it would be breakfast or I would just skip right on into lunch/brunch.

I can recall years ago calling a nutritionist to ask for some advice on losing weight.

She inquired the usual questions like how much do you weigh and how are your eating habits.

I explained to her that I almost never ate breakfast and the rest of my meals was spread far apart and high calorie fat laden foods that were easy to prepare mostly by microwave and quickly accessible to via drive-through. She immediately scoffed, "my dear, you are starving yourself."

After she said this to me I thought, honey you are so wrong about that.

I was not starving at all and I eat enough food to feel full. But what she was really saying to me was I wasn't properly nourishing myself with the right nutrients and I was shutting down my metabolism by infrequent eating patterns.

She told me this was the reason I was so fat because my body was storing everything I ate for not knowing when its next meal was coming.

At the time I didn't get what the whole conversation was about.

I thought she was crazy and laughed at her. I hung up the phone and bypassed the whole nutrition jargon she was throwing at me.

Me, starving myself, my body is starving? How could that be? That was impossible.

I, of course, continued my own way of eating and slowly over the years with poor eating and low energy grew more and more obese.

Due to my increasing weight gain my health starting failing. I have high blood pressure and diabetes and high cholesterol and upon a doctors visit found that I have damage to my heart which is indicative of a heart attack.

I decided I wanted to make some changes in my diet.

I went back to the conversation in my head with the nutritionist years ago and desired to follow her advice along with the advice of a close friend of mine who just recently lost 100 lbs.

I now get up every morning, thanks to God, and have breakfast.

I cut out the drive-through trips and cook at home eating healthy foods like fish, chicken, and vegetables.

Ten years ago I was more than likely consuming between 3000 and 5000 calories a day.

Now I eat about 1600 calories or less a day and eat way more food than I ever had in my life. I must say when I eat sometimes I am overwhelmed at how much food I am eating.

The fewer calories and fat the more food you eat.

I log all the foods I eat and count every little morsel that goes into my mouth and I don't deprive myself. I still have a cookie every once in a while.

So to answer the question of am I starving myself?

I was starving but now I am eating better and well nourished.

Remember it takes 20 minutes for your brain to signal you are full so please take the time to enjoy life and what is on your plate. God bless and healthy eating to you.
