Why Martial Arts is the Perfect Sport For Health and Weight Loss

Many people learn martial arts for all kinds of reasons. Some for health, some for weight loss and some for self defense.

Others like the thrill of executing high kicks, complex takedowns and sparring.

But a little known fact about martial arts is that it could be what the doctor ordered to burn those fats and build those muscles!

You see, most sports only use either the upper or lower limbs vigorously.

Take soccer and kayaking/canoeing for instance.

You only use your legs for soccer whilst in a kayak or canoe, only your arms move and your lower body is dormant in the raft.

But for martial arts, example tournament karate; boxing, muay thai, jujitsu and even wushu your body is constantly moving about.

You will always need to throw combinations as your opponent is not a dummy but a fellow competitor who can read your movements as well. Because of this, competitive martial arts builds mental fortitude because you have to think how to win in fights or tournaments.

Unlike soccer, basketball, American football or rugby, martial arts is not a team sport , so you develop or are forced to develop attributes where you have to learn how to stand on your own feet and be independent, disciplined, determined and have perseverance to achieve your goal (example to get black belt or to win a tournament).

It also builds self-confidence in you and many a times, martial arts practitioners are people who know what they want, have tons of focus and an aggressive faith in themselves knowing what they do will succeed.

These are the same attributes as successful businessmen and inventors!

What martial art should you choose? Well there are tons of them out there.

Simply call up your local fight gym or dojo, drop by to take a look and see if you like the art.

Some martial arts offer the first trial lesson free, but if not, go to YouTube, watch some videos, and ask yourself if your goal is:

-An anaerobic workout that makes you sweat and burn calories in a more exciting way than jogging

- Self defense from dangerous street situations

- A sense of fulfillment from winning competitions

- Or simply, the thrill of executing a high kick or a grappling technique
